I am currently student teaching and there is a student in my class whom is having difficulty responding to my managment techniques. I feel that this child takes advantage of me because I am a student teacher and not a real teacher...yet. I feel that I have tried everything, and at this point I am will to try anything that comes my way. If anyone has any ideas, please feel free to respond. All help is appreciated. Thanks.

I think the most important thing is that you are consistent, fair, and caring. Take some time to talk to the child away from the rest of the class. Talk to the child's parent in order to understand what makes the child tick. Enlist the help of the head teacher as well as the parent in order to get the best from this child. Children will always push the boundaries till you make it clear where those boundaries are. Some will push even more to make sure you are going to be consistent with them. If you fail their test you will continually be at odds with them. When they realize you will be a stable force in their life they will respect you more and follow the rules more.

Be sure to notice the good things that student does. Catch them doing the right things and reinforce them.

good luck

Hi,

I completely agree with Urban Teacher. Especially the part about catching students being right.

However, we do have a strategy that we use in our school called a "clinic" that works great! Simply tell the student that you would like to see them at recess (or during any valued time). During that time you "re-teach" the approapriate behavior in a non-emotional way. This does not have to take long. Simply explain the appropriate behavior, then model it for the student, then have the student show the appropriate behavior back to you. This can be done for anything and may only take a few minutes. If you have to do it again the next day, then so be it. Keep giving the student "clinics" until they get the point. Belive me, they will get it quickly if the clinic is done on their time.

Good luck. Feel free to ask me any questions about this strategy. It really works great!
