Hi!

I am an Elementary Teacher. I have been out of school for six years and have not had my first teaching job yet. I have spent the majority of the past six years as a substitute teacher. I am looking for some advice on developing a teaching portfolio and what sort of things I can and should be including in there. Since I have graduated I have done several education related things. I tutored for a year, I have taught Sunday school and VBS, I attended three workshops and returned to school to complete additional course work in the areas of Early Childhood Education, reading and math. As part of my reading courses I spent six weeks in a 1st grade classroom teaching reading. Any advice and comments would be greatly appreciated. I am still very excited about teaching and hope to one day have a classroom to call my own!!!!!!!

Marci,
I graduated from college about 2 1/2 years ago and I created my first portfolio while I was subbing. I used Netscape Navigator to create a portfolio. I dont' know how computer savvy you are, but it's not that hard. It made my job search SO much easier! Most principals shrug at portfolios but when you hand them an electronic one, they suddenly get curious. In fact, I got my first full time job clear across the country, without ever meeting face-to-face. After I was hired, my principal told me that part of the reason he hired me was because of my portfolio. I highly suggest creating an electronic portfolio and burning it to a CD to copy and send to schools. It will get you the job! Good luck!
