Our newly formed Elementary Teachers' Council is looking for information about other districts' successful scheduling of collaboration time for classroom teachers and other professionals who serve children's needs. We have demonstrated to our administration that one 35 minute "prep" / day is inadequate. Presently, we have a 40-minute guaranteed "duty-free" lunch for a total of 5 hours 25 minutes "student contact" time. In addition, classroom and special subject teachers operate on a 6-day "A - F" schedule, while other teachers operate on a 5-day Mon. - Fri. schedule. Special subject teachers (Art, P.E., Music) teach 8 35-minute periods/day.
Any relevant information as to what scheduling your district has offered and what works for you - anyone out there(!) - would be greatly appreciated.

I agree it is interesting and helpful to identify what other schools and teachers are doing. It is essential for teachers to collaborate. Great ideas and classroom activities should be shard by teachers and districts.

Our building went to block scheduling for specials last year, so all teachers at a grade level have specials at the same time. This gave them more time to collaborate. Unfortunately as a support person working with more than one grade level, it was hard for me to schedule a common time to collaborate. This year we're trying a five year schedule.
