Try reading "The First Days of School" by Harry Wong it has a lot of great ideas for elementary school aged children and classroom management. I have been teaching 5th grade the past 3 years and it is important to have high expectations. They are capable of meeting any expectations you have for them. Parents are the hard part because they rarely hold their own child accountable..... Be firm!! Enjoy them. I love 5th grade. Good Luck!
I too left the 7th and 8th graders behind.
I can't wait to start with my fifth graders. I've been preping all summer long but will only have two day to set up before they start school.

Yes, you must read The First Days of School by Harry Wong. I have taught fourth and fifth grades for the past few years. I read this book every summer before school starts. It's all common sense but he has good ideas to reinforce it. I also used a reward system of "dollars" in my class that they could use to buy things from the treasure chest once a month. It was easy and definitely worked! They also had to pay "dollars" if they weren't doing what they were supposed to.
