Our 5th grade is self-contained this year and I'd like some examples of daily schedules. How much time do you spend in each subject area, etc...? Also, what is the best way to organize benchmarks since we have to cover so many subjects? I'm thrilled about this position, but need the summer to get organized! TIA

Susan,
I teach 4th grade - selfcontained - and I can tell you how my next year is going to go:
8:02-8:15 Warm-up
8:15-9:00 Specials (gym, music, art, comp)
9-10:45 Science/S.Studies
10:45-11:45 math
11:45-12:25 Lunch
12:25-1:50 Language Arts
1:50-2:10 Recess
2:10-2:45 Language Arts cont.
2:45-3:08 Write in planners (homework notebooks), announcements, read aloud
As for how the year is going to be structured to meet benchmarks, another teacher and I are working on the following: in 4th grade we teach states and regions, we are planning to break the year into segments based on regions. We will then plug in our science and language arts into the regions. For example in sciene we study plants and animal adaptation, we will study the plants and animals of each region. For writing/reading, we will read things that go with the region and try to use writing assignmetns that fit into the region study. So far, the planning is going well. We are excited about next year.
