class / teaching set up

I teach at a small school with two grade levels in the room. We are working on reconfiguration for next year. My question is does anyone know or do teaching by content areas instead of grade levels. For example, teach only science to grades levels k through 8. Another teacher would do all the math for the various levels?
What's your opinion on this idea?

I would talk to the middle school or high school in your area. If they already have that system in place, they might have some information for you. I have seen teachers teach content in the same grade level, and switch kids all day. But your situation seems unique. How exciting!!
