I'm an unqualified English teacher, currently in the last few weeks of my degree, and researching my final thesis. I'm looking at the recent introduction of the WJEC Entry Level Certificate in English to year 10 students in the local secondary school where I work(I am conducting a field study on student motivation, as I am teaching the course to the students). I have done a lot of research so far, but seem to be drawing a blank in finding out how the ELC in English is viewed as far as post-16 progression is concerned.
I'd be really grateful if anyone can suggest any links for where I might find information about the progression value of ELCs (my local college has been really unhelpful)and does anyone know if the ELC in English viewed as an appropriate measure of basic skills that can lead into NVQ foundation or level 1 qualifications and thus may offer validity for the student in terms of progression?
What I am trying to investigate here is where the ELC stands in terms of a qualification route, as now that Tomlinson's diploma proposals are not to be implemented, it would appear that there is a danger the ELC qualification may end up as a "stand alone" qualification. A lot of my research was based around Tomlinson's proposals, but now that's been scrapped I've got to rethink that part and only a couple of weeks to go! I am finding from the students that I work with that there is a huge motivation and self -esteem factor tied up in the ELC so validity and an opportunity to see progression from it are essential, and it would be helpful to my research to find out what the realistic progression possibilities are without Tomlinson's proposed 14 - 19 route. I am looking at English specifically, but if anyone knows any links or reports to do with moivation, particularly the effects of setting on motivation, I'd be SO GRATEFUL!
Peace, love and huge thanks in anticipation :0)
