I am currently doing a research paper on the advantages and disadvantages of using kindergarten screenings. I was looking to see how teachers feel about screening children and if they feel that there is a benefit to this or if it does nothing. I am interested to hear how other schools deal with screening and the requirements that are in schools/districts. Also, I was wondering if teachers use this to make individualized instruction in their classrooms. I would to hear from anyone in regards to this topic. Thank You!
We administer the PHELPS readiness test in the spring, prior to entering K kids for the next fall. I like the test itself -- our cut-off deadline is August 31st. The parents for the most part, do not hold their child back if he/she has a late birthday or if skills are low. I do not feel that the testing helps parents make their decision, because they have made up their minds previous to my advice. Our school does not have a policy regarding this. Kind. is not mandatory in our state which is sad. With No Child Left Behind, I am frustrated as we are teaching so many 1st gr. skills to these kids who will be assessed throughout their school life. I am wanting all-day everyday K for next fall but that will never happen.... I do feel readiness testing is a great tool for the teacher. Good luck with your research!
